Fort Warren was completed near the beginning of the Civil War and is a pentagonal structure of granite and stone. It was decommissioned in 1947 and believed to be quite haunted. It received its name after Revolutionary War hero Dr. Joseph Warren, who sent Paul Revere on his well-known ride. So, who is said to haunt the place? A ghostly lady in black. Witnesses believe the lady is the wife of Lt. Andrew Lanier, who was imprisoned here during the Civil War. The woman was distraught and wanted to see her husband and help him escape, so she snuck onto the island wearing men's clothing. When she was caught, her husband was shot and she was sentenced to be hanged. She asked if she could wear women's clothing when she was hanged, so she was given a black dress that had been used in a soldiers' play. Her ghost has reportedly been seen on the island and can sometimes be heard moaning and screaming.
